Keeping trains reliably connected is tricky. Here’s how Venn delivered a rail transport solution Eurailscout could rely on.
Reliable connectivity for safer railways: Eurailscout user study
Every day Eurailscout is out on the tracks, ensuring rail transport is safe, reliable and available.
Eurailscout are on a daily mission to ensure rail transport is safe, reliable and available.
Working 24/7 across European countries – including the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and France - their monitoring provides railway services with clear information on the condition of railway tracks and infrastructure.
Using specially-designed measurement trains and video images, they map out the infrastructure and identify any defects early on.
The data gathered by measurement trains is then analysed to identify potential problems and recommend maintenance before it causes disruptions and safety hazards.
Eurailscout's goal is to prevent problems before they occur, so rail transport stays safe and reliable.
Rail and transport’s “impossible” connectivity challenge
In the transport sector, reliable contact with and control of mobile equipment is crucial for measurement and maintenance. But Eurailscout’s assets are often operating in hard-to-reach locations with limited connectivity.
Keeping trains connected is hard.
As anyone who works on them can tell you, train connectivity is tricky for lots of reasons.
- Trains are full of vibration & heat, making them difficult for equipment.
- Wired is not an option. Forests and tunnels can block LEO services.
- Cellular can work but trains move fast: across borders, and in and out of data provider’s service areas.
- Geographical features - hills, valleys, trees, tunnels and stations - also cause interference.
Eurailscout had already invested in a track and trace system. They’d spent a lot of money but the system was not meeting their needs as it couldn’t cope with the lack of stable internet.
Eurailscout needed both connectivity and a provider they could rely on.
How we solved Eurailscout’s transport problem
Enhanced 4G routers and global data providers were the keys to solving Eurailscouts connectivity problem.
Here how Venn’s solution works.
- 4G routers, coupled with enhanced antennas, combine data from global data providers. This enables constant connection.
- Multi-provider 4G data means constant asset connectivity, allowing Eurailscout to interact and intervene remotely as needed.
- Once installed on an asset, Eurailscout can access these via the internet to solve issues. It is all managed easily through one portal.
Reliable connectivity everywhere: Eurailscout’s results
Venn Telecom’s solution has delivered “reliable connectivity everywhere on the rails.” It enabled the connectivity they previously thought it was impossible to have.
The old track and trace system is now unnecessary. Eurailscout can find and interact with their assets via Venn’s portal.
In addition, Venn’s service has been “unmatched by other providers”, says Eurailscout. “The solution suits our needs. The client support is fantastic, with fast reactions by the team.”
In one case, where a SIM router became defective, they noted that this was fixed “very fast” and put back in service by Venn’s rapid dispatch of another router.
Venn know how important connectivity is; we’re always ready to respond and go the extra mile to help our customers achieve their goals, wherever they are and whatever they need.
Making it possible
Keeping the transport and logistic sector reliably connected has always been seen as tricky.
4G and global data make reliable connectivity possible for Eurailscout - and they’re one of the technologies we use every day to solve “impossible” problems.
Whether it’s ensuring constant connection on the high seas or providing complex worldwide back-up to dispersed and remote sites, Venn Telecom works with you to create a new world of options.
The “train” problem:
- Moving vehicles are hard to keep connected
- Real-time monitoring is vital for railway safety
- Unreliable connectivity in remote areas hinders safety operations
Our solution:
